It has been a long time coming, but the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) has officially added Girls Flag Football to the list of official school sports. This approval happened during the February 4th board meeting. In fact, according to teachers here in Rich Township, a posting for Flag Football Head Coach is already live on the website. This is an exciting opportunity for more female athletes in Rich Township to be involved in a varsity level sport.
Jakyra Burton, another junior says, “I can’t wait! I’m definitely wanting to be a part of this team. I know some other girls who would be great at flag football too, so I’m very excited about the fall.”
The IHSA has said the flag football will conduct its inaugural season and postseason, including an IHSA Girls Flag Football State Champion, this fall in 2024.
According to Dan Tully, the President of the IHSA Board of Directors, “It is important for the IHSA to continue to adapt to the interests of our students’ and schools’” (IHSA.org)
Amarion McKenzie, a junior at the FAC campus, sais, “I think it’s great the both the boys and girls will have a football season at the same time. You’ll definitely find me out watching some games.”
Girls Flag Football joins a growing list of sports, the most recent of which was Girls Wrestling in 2022. Stay tuned, as there will certainly be more information available in the coming weeks.
