Getting Together: Are high-school relationships a distraction for students?

Views on whether relationships are distracting or not depend on if the Rich Central students one asks are in a relationship at the moment.

Tia Carter, a single junior, says that “having a boyfriend shouldn’t be a distraction. School should be your number one priority.”

On the other hand, Cassandra Burres, a junior who has been in a relationship for two years, believes that relationships are “substantially” distracting.

Burres’ reasoning is simple: “If you want a relationship to work you put in a lot of time and effort, and that time and effort you put in can be taken away from homework or study time.”

Teachers notice a change in the student if “they’re in the same class,” as both Ms. Cole, English teacher, and Mrs. Aguirre, math teacher, both agreed upon.

Ms. Cole said that she had never seen “good students slip when in relationships.”

The only real difference in students that Mrs. Aguirre stated was that “when it is a bad relationship, the student gets moody.”
